Self-Employed Carpenter Wins $1M Lottery Jackpot, Dies

A self-employed carpenter has died three weeks after winning the $1 million lottery jackpot. Donald Savastano, the 51-year-old New York native, was a carpenter by profession. He purchased the lucky ticket at a gas station in December after stopping for fuel on his way home from work. “I buy scratch-off tickets pretty regularly, but I don’t normally play the holiday tickets. I saw the Merry Millionaire ticket and figured, ‘Why not?’” Savastano told New York Lottery officials. He scratched the card while walking back to his car.

Apart from buying a new truck, paying off some debt, Savastano also wanted to put some of his winnings aside for his retirement. He could also visit a doctor, which was when his fortunes took a turn for the worse. Danielle Scott, who worked at the store where Savastano bought his lottery ticket, said: “He didn’t have insurance, he hadn’t been feeling good for a while, I guess, and when he got the money he went into the doctor.”

The 51-year-old said: “I couldn’t believe it! I brought it back in and scanned it under the ticket checker and knew it was a winner.” He received a check of $661,800 (€552,700) after required taxes on January 8th. But, the winner died less than three weeks after scooping the million dollar jackpot of €835,200 from a scratch card. He passed away on January 26th from stage 4 cancer.

As per New York lottery officials, he was well-known for his high-quality work and perfectionism. He always tried to reach out and help people. He left his mother, four brothers, two sisters, and the long-term girlfriend. All of them have declined requests for comment.
