Retired Xerox Employee Becomes $9.8 Million Richer

Richard Giles, a 76-year-old retired Xerox employee, earned 9.8 million reasons to live comfortably in his old age. He bought a Quick Pick ticket at Hegedorn’s Market on Ridge Road. This ticket helped him scoop a $9.8 million jackpot matching all the winning numbers – 06, 16, 24, 25, 37, 38, and Bonus Ball 34.

Giles has collected his winning check from Yolanda Vega, the most recognizable voice of the New York Lottery. He collected a check of $4,419,643 preferring to receive the one-time lump sum payment. He preferred this option because of his old age. In a statement, the Xerox repairman said, “I checked my numbers after the drawing and realised that I matched all six numbers. I immediately locked the ticket up in my safe and called my financial advisor.”

He plans to buy himself a new set of golf clubs, a new bowling ball, and invest the rest amount. The Xerox retiree is also planning to do some travelling and help his siblings and his church. He has been playing with the same set of numbers for last few years. Giles quickly signed the back side of the ticket and kept it in a safe place when he realised his ticket matched all the numbers drawn. He then called his financial adviser.

Even after winning the sizeable sum, the Xerox repairman doesn’t want to change his lifestyle or area of living. “Seriously, I asked Richard what he was feeling in his heart and his mind after winning 9.8 million dollars. He told me he was just the same person he was. So that is just priceless,” said Yolanda Vega from the New York State Lottery, who presented Giles with the check.
