Doreen Stisi went to Horry Georgetown Technical College eight years back and received a grant. She was a single mom of three kids that time. “Without that, there’s no way I would have been able to attend,” Doreen said. She now works at Speedway in Conway.

Harold Hawley, HGTC Vice President of Finance and Administration, said that 92 percent of their students receive financial aids. Till today, 3,120 students have received funding through the scholarships as well as grants contributed by the Education Lottery. “It often becomes the difference between going and not going to college,” said Hawley. In total, 1.7 million college students in South Carolina have received financial assistance in last 15 years, since the lottery started. The money distribution is done as per a pre-defined formula. The lottery authorities don’t mess with the money anyway.
