Many of us would prefer to buy a car, a new house, or go on a vacation trip with a lifetime salary of C$1,000 a week after hitting the jackpot in the Gagnant à vie (winner for life) lottery. But the way of thinking was different for Rachel Lapierre. The former Miss Quebec always loved volunteering as she was associated with working as a nurse and running her modelling agency. She won the Miss Quebec beauty pageant when she was 21-year-old.
The beauty queen who followed Mother Teresa as her idol dedicated her life to charity. She started her own charity, Le Book Humanitaire. It took only two months for her to quit her nursing job and launch the non-profit organisation in Saint-Jerome, about 60km North West of Montreal.
“At first I could not believe it, but I did not celebrate or shout it from the rooftop because I had made a promise to the universe and I was determined to keep it. I wanted to do something I loved for the rest of my life. I wanted to help others,” Lapierre said. If anybody has clothes to give away, Le Book Humanitaire gives him/her a chance to contact with a family that needs those clothes. The agency is using social media to connect the deprived people. It is now counting on municipalities to lend offices as well as make donations.
