Mechanic scoops £25k from £1 bet

Stuart Mathews, a mechanic by profession, has started off the new year in style. He bagged £25,000 in a lottery after placing a £1 bet. The 38-year-old man won this prize just hours after buying an engagement ring and believes that the ring brought him luck.

The lucky winner decided to take a gamble when he was about to propose his partner. He has just bought a £300,000 house with his partner, Sue. He told the Daily Post: ”It is unbelievable really that all these brilliant things have happened in a few days…and what a start to 2018.”

Assisted by Sue’s teenage daughter, Sophie, the winner bought an engagement ring in Llandudno, Wales, on December 23. He did it before wagering £1 on the New York lottery. In doing so, he preferred selecting his regular ticket numbers – 7, 19, 37 and 50.

Stuart Mathews said: ”After hiding the ring in the house because I wanted to propose on a New Year’s Eve party, I went on the works do. Next morning on Christmas Eve I woke up late and was a bit hung over. I thought I had better check my phone because the way my luck was going, I had an inkling I might have won on the New York lottery.”

On winning, he could not believe his luck and asked Sue to check it. He added: ”I just feel over the moon – a fiancée, a have a big win and a new family home. On Christmas Eve, we had ordered a bottle of champagne to celebrate the win, and then another one to celebrate us getting engaged on New Year’s Eve.” Sue describes her fiancé as a gentle and romantic person. She knew that he might propose, but it was still a lovely surprise.
