A series of bad luck for a Thomasville man ended instantly as he scoops a $400,000 lottery prize on Thursday. Thomasville man says, “A lot of bad things have happened lately. And, then my sister’s car broke down.”
Marcus Savvas lives in Thomasville and installs fire sprinkler systems. Marcus picks her sister after getting her call and stops for gas at Kangaroo Express on Randolph Street, Thomasville. According to the North Carolina Education Lottery press release, Marcus rarely plays the lottery. He went inside the store only to buy a cold drink for her sister. And, while he was there he thought, “My luck can’t get any worse, so why not get a scratch-off ticket?”
Afterwards, Marcus picked a $5 ticket from the $400,000 Bonus Cash game. As he scratched off the ticket, he saw his luck had turned. He won $400,000 top prize. “If it wasn’t for her, I wouldn’t have gotten the ticket,” Marcus said. “She’s my good luck charm.”
Marcus claimed his prize in Lottery Headquarters in Raleigh on Thursday. He took home $276,067 after required state and federal tax withholdings. He further plans to use the winnings to pay his bills and help her sister with her car.
Above all, $40,000 Bonus Cash game launched in July 2016. As Marcus has claimed the top prize, the lottery will take steps to end the game. Moreover, ticket sales from such games help lottery to raise more than half a billion dollars a year for education.
