Someone forgot to claim $1 million worth Mega Millions ticket

Do you have a February 21 Mega Millions lottery ticket with numbers 9-21-30-32 and Mega Ball number 9? Well, it was a million dollar ticket.

Yes! You heard it right. It was a $1 million ticket. However, there’s no point in getting happy now, unless the form was in the mail and had already been postmarked. The deadline to claim the jackpot was Sunday.

A former longtime Arlington councilman, Robert Rivera, who serves on the Texas Lottery Commission, says, “Buying a ticket is only half of it. You have to pay attention and go out and claim it.” However, if you fail to claim it, the state of Texas or the people of Texas become the ultimate winner.

Unclaimed lottery prize money goes to the Foundation School Fund. The Texas Education Agency oversees the school. As per the Texas Lottery Commission, the agency helps fund school needs across the state ranging from bilingual to special education. According to state records, more than $1 billion has been given back to the state since 1992, the year Texas Lottery began. Also, there are many winners of different draws who didn’t claim their winnings. Last year $83.5 million worth prizes went unclaimed while $52.8 million prizes have so far gone unclaimed this year.

Above all, 7-Eleven at 7235 N. George Bush Freeway in Garland sold the $1 million Mega Millions ticket from Feb. 21 draw. Rivera along with other lottery officials urges Texans always to check their tickets after each draw. Mega Millions and Powerball winning tickets are valid for 180 days from the day of the drawing. Scratch-off tickets are also valid for 180-days after the “close-date” of the ticket set by lottery officials.
