Mavis Wancyzk on Thursday said that buying a Powerball ticket “was just a chance I had to take”. The 53-year old second-largest Powerball jackpot winner is a hospital worker. She purchased three tickets at Pride Station and Store in Chicopee.
The two of the three tickets were computer generated while the third ticket which helped Mavis scoop $759 million Powerball jackpot was picked by herself. The decision to choose the numbers by herself helped Mavis hit the second largest Powerball jackpot in US history.
Here is what Mavis has to say on picking the winning numbers-
“My numbers were kind of basically random, like maybe with our birthdays, maybe one from here, one from there. I just — whatever could work. And you know, there’s a thing between me and my mom and my stepfather and I have a friend, we all go out to dinner on Friday night and we all play Keno and our number is four. So I just happened to choose, and it worked to my advantage.”
Mavis chose the one-time lump sum payout option of $480.5 million over an annuity. However, after 25 percent tax to the federal government and 5 percent to her state Massachusetts, she will receive $336 million to take home.
