Mavis Wanczyk hit the massive $759 million Wednesday’s Powerball Jackpot. She won the second-largest lottery prize in U.S. history. She told her long-time employer that she would not be coming to work now and not ever.
Mavis, 53-year-old, Chicopee, Massachusetts, said that she was just starting to come down from the shock and overwhelming excitement of discovering that she held the single winning ticket.
“Last night, it was kind of like — I didn’t realize I had won,” Mavis said in an afternoon news conference. “Now, it’s like — I am a winner, and I’m scared. But I’ll be okay.”
Mavis has worked for 32 years at Mercy Medical Center and had hoped to retire early. She added, “I had a pipe dream, and my pipe dream finally came true.” After winning the Powerball, Mavis called and told them that she would not be coming back. Furthermore, she wants to be alone and just be able to be her.
Moreover, according to Associated Press, Massachusetts State lottery officials told that Mavis, a regular lottery player bought a total five tickets. She purchased three tickets from the Pride Station & Store in Chicopee with numbers she chose along with two quick-pick tickets. Mavis picked the winning ticket using a combination of family birthdays and her lucky number 4.
The winning numbers were: 6-7-16-23-26
Powerball: 4
Mavis chose the lump sum payment of $480 ($336 million after taxes). This is the biggest lottery jackpot hit by a single-ticket in US history. In addition to this, Massachusetts Lottery Officials earlier stated that the Handy Variety convenience store in Watertown sold the winning ticket. However, they corrected their statement later saying that the single winning ticket has been purchased in Chicopee where Mavis lives. In fact, Handy Variety sold a $1 million lottery prize ticket.
