As the state’s General Assembly struggles to pass a budget that includes lottery funding for the year 2018, the Illinois Lottery on Wednesday announced to suspend the sale of Powerball and Mega Millions tickets.
The Powerball suspension is effective from 9 p.m. CT on June 28, and the Mega Millions suspension will come into effect on Friday, June 30 at 9:45 p.m. CT. Earlier this month, Illinois Lottery officials had warned of an impending suspension against the three-year budget impasse. Greg Smith, Illinois Lottery acting director said, “Players should be confident knowing the Illinois Lottery has money to pay the winning claims.” The press release described this suspension as an unprecedented step.
With this unprecedented step, the chances of winning Powerball and Mega Millions prizes just got reduced. Winners who have claimed more than $25,000 will experience delays in payment if the lottery funding doesn’t get approved by July 1. However, all the Powerball and Mega Million tickets that have been purchased before suspension will remain valid.
