Pensioner Hits Russia’s Biggest Lottery Jackpot

Natalia Vlassova bought her Russia’s state-run lottery ticket from a local post office. She waited a week until her granddaughter checked the winning numbers and explored the jackpot worth billion rubles; i.e., $8.5 million. As per the news published on lottery’s official website on November 17, the 63-year-old retiree from the region of Voronezh won the largest-ever jackpot in Russia. Even though they were familiar with the huge win, Natalia and her family then decided to recheck the ticket. So, they rechecked the information several times. She, along with her daughter Catherine, visited the lottery headquarters and claimed the record jackpot worth 506,000,000 rubles this week. Statistics say that the average Russian pensioners receive about 14,000 rubles a month.

Catherine, the winner’s daughter, stated, “The second time I rechecked the ticket on the [lottery’s] website I saw the numbers lined up and the incredible amount of money we had won.” Instead of saving the whole amount, the lucky winner wants to give some of her winnings to charity. She expressed her view in a video posted on the website. But, they have not decided how they will use the rest portion of their winnings. Natalia and Catherine think that they need some time to decide about the utilisation of windfall.

A resident of the Siberian city of Novosibirsk was holding this record as he scooped 350 million rubles (US$4.7 million) last year. He purchased his lucky ticket (ticket cost 1,800 rubles) in a Novosibirsk retail outlet. The winner managed to match all six winning numbers; i.e., 1, 7, 11, 13, 42, and 45. He chose to remain anonymous. Rossiiskaya Gazeta was the previous person who was holding the record of winning country’s biggest lottery jackpot. In adherence to according to a spokeswoman for Stoloto, Yulia Gavrishova, he scooped 202 million rubles (US$2.7 million) in 2014.
