The long halt of Mega Millions and Powerball ticket sales in Illinois recommences. With the passage of state budget, The Illinois Lottery on Thursday announced that sales of Mega Millions tickets have resumed.
“The Illinois Lottery has resumed sales of Mega Millions and Powerball tickets now that state budget’s stalemate has concluded,” lottery officials said. “The Illinois Lottery is pleased to announce that sales of Mega Millions have resumed, and players may purchase tickets at any of the Lottery’s nearly 8,000 retail partners, via our mobile app, or at http://www.illinoislottery.com
The state stopped Powerball and Mega Millions ticket sales due to inability to contribute to the prize pool without a budget in place. The lottery announced that payments of more than 25,000 would be delayed as of July 1 until budget was passed. The Powerball suspension came into effect at 9 p.m. CT on June 28 while the Mega Millions suspension came into effect on June 30 at 9:45 p.m. CT.
The Illinois lottery later said that it had the money to give huge jackpot prizes to winners. But, under the law, State General Assembly must provide the authority each year for the comptroller to pay large jackpots.
Earlier, the Illinois Lottery halted all in-state sales of Mega Millions and Powerball tickets. Also, Illinois’ annual profit from Mega Millions and Powerball games is historically about $90 million.
