Massachusetts Has More Repeat Lottery Winners, Investigation Begins

Massachusetts has a high rate of repeat lottery winners. This US state has more repeat lottery winners than the other states. An investigation started on the lottery winners that claim more than 1,000 winning tickets results in Massachusetts officials suspecting more than just extreme luck behind this. A question arises whether certain individuals are compromising the integrity of the $5 billion state lottery.

As per the officials, many winners may be “10 percenters” who charge a fee to claim winning tickets. Some people want to avoid taxes while others are not ready to apply for the money themselves. The Massachusetts lottery compiled a list of customers which is comprised of those clients who claimed at least 20 prize payments.

More than 50 residents were recorded in Massachusetts in last six years who cashed more than 200 lottery tickets worth at least $600 each. “I do not know if our oversight is lacking in comparison to other states,” Michael R. Sweeney, the executive director of the Massachusetts Lottery Commission said. He is confident on the betterment of the same.

The lottery will establish a policy to freeze payments to such (with six or more claims) customers. First-time offenders will have to face a 30 days ban. The duration will be 180 days for second-time offenders.
