You can soon buy lottery tickets with debit cards

Here’s some good news for lottery players. Soon you will be able to use your debit card to buy lottery tickets.  Starting from August 1, you can buy lottery tickets using your debit cards. However, not every retailer will provide you with this option.

There are some small businesses’ which think the transaction fees will outweigh the benefits of selling lottery tickets. However, lottery players believe this is a good for most people. “It’ll boost the lottery, get earnings up to a little more and maybe give people more chances to win,” a lottery player said.

On the contrary, David Hall, owner of K Hall & Sons Produce in Little Rock said his store will more likely lose money by offering the option. He added, “With the fees associated with debit cards, transaction fees and so forth, it’s just not beneficial.”

Moreover, lottery retailers get five percent base commission on scratch off tickets and lottery draw games like Powerball and MegaMillions. So, on a $1 lottery ticket with the transaction and other fees we would actually lose money unless it is a large transaction, Hall added.

Hall also said that business like his do not make much off lottery tickets in first place. It’s just something we have for a convenience to some of the customers, he added.

However, Arkansas Scholarship Lottery Director, Bishop Woosley, said that not every business has to adopt the new law. He added, “This law is not mandatory. This gives our players more convenience, and our retailers more option.”

Bishop also estimates that around 50% of businesses will have the debit card system up running from August 1. Above all, you can still not purchase lottery tickets using credit cards and checks.
