Newfoundland couple turns province’s newest millionaires

A couple from Conception Bay South, Newfoundland, recently scooped $2.6-million jackpot by drawing the elusive ace of spades. This win made Don and Marg Gorman into the newest millionaires of the state. They luckily pulled the winning card in the second round of the Wednesday night’s Chase the Ace draw.

Their win also ended up the lottery that lasted more than 44 weeks and captured attention from all corners of the nation. Hundreds of people gathered at the St. Kevin’s Parish Hall as Carol O’Brien (the organiser) drew the winning tickets. More than 60,000 others were also waiting for the number to be drawn. People began lining up, and the line was a kilometre long by 7:30 am.

“I am not sure yet. Four of us are in on it, including my son,” Don replied after being asked about the wish-list. Before that, Stokes from Mount Pearl, Newfoundland, drew the 10 of spades and scooped more than $437,000 as the consolation prize.
