A 26-year-old woman, who wishes not to be known by her actual name and wants to be addressed only as Carole was conned of her life savings after she was duped into believing that a Thai Sifu could bring her monetary luck. She claimed to have incurred a huge loss of around RM240,280 in the hope of winning a fortune.
Carole got to know about the monk and his services through a pamphlet and identified him as Seng Shu. The monk had told her that she had a splendid fortune to win the grand prize of RM960,000 in cash by purchasing lottery. And, to get the winning numbers she needed to bank-in RM20 to an account that was under the name of “Suvitta Agarbathi Dharma.” Two days later, she received a 4-digit number and an amulet via a courier and was instructed to burn the amulet and contact a person called “Ah Dong from Thailand,” Carole stated in a press conference at Gerakan Public Service and Complaints Bureau office today.
Ah Dong claimed to be the assistant to the monk and told her to buy the lottery using another number which appeared to be the registration number of a motorcycle. Eventually, the number failed to match the winning jackpot numbers, and when she contacted AH Dong in January last year, she was instructed to transfer more money.
“Such a situation had been going on for 32 times, and I had given RM240,000 in total,” Carole said, informing that all her savings had depleted and she has been cheated. She had borrowed RM220,000 from her parents and aunt including RM40,000 from her mother’s Employees Provident Fund.
Carole lodged a police report at Jenjarom police station on April 30 last year. Gerakan Public Service and Complaints Bureau deputy chief, Ben Liew Pok Boon said, “We have cross-checked with Bank Negara Malaysia over the bank account and found that it had been closed in February.”
He later added that the bureau would be cooperating with Royal Malaysia Police to assist in the investigation. The monitoring has revealed that such lottery scams are not only active in the Klang Valley but are also flourishing in Penang and Perak states.
