A Lottery dealer sold 30 pairs of tickets with the same number to a 75-year-old man who won a record 180 million baht. The record, which was sitting on 60 million earlier, suddenly turned three times with this win. The Grnovement Lottery Office (GLO), Thailand, is determined to punish the dealers who received the lottery tickets from the GLO separately and traded them jointly. Such practices violate the agreement made with the GLO.
Selling bundles of lottery tickets is not illegal, but a dealer cannot have more than two tickets with identical numbers, and hence the entire group is discarded from the rights of getting further tickets. Maj Gen Chalongrat Nakartit asked some of his subordinates to find these dealers. As per his words, it is not a challenging job to find the group of traders involved. He also thinks that the investigation could take some time. So, anyone found to have sold these bundles will have their contracts cancelled.
The dealers are not allowed to sell tickets at higher prices than 80 baht. But, the dealers, associated with this case, trade entries with the same number at higher prices than allowed. That’s why; the winner would not be treated as a guilty. The problem is connected to overpricing in tickets, following the words of GLO spokesman Thanavath Phonvichai. Even though GLO defines the rate, a small portion of buyers pays more to get desired numbers.
However, selling overpriced lottery tickets, against consumer’s willingness, can lead a dealer to one month prison or a fine of up to ten thousand baht.
