Charles Svatos, a 92-year-old man, bought a $2 Lucky for Life ticket at a convenience store (Gasby) near his home in North Liberty. The regular visitor of that store won $25,000 a year for life. He wished to have a cup of coffee and play the lottery on Sunday.
According to Iowa Lottery bosses, Svatos preferred to collect $390,000 as a one-time lump sum payment. He took this decision because of his age. He received a whopping $273,000 after federal tax of $100,000 and state tax $20,000.
It was “an unexpected treasure” according to the 92-year-old grandfather. He retired 39 years back after working in dairies. He expressed, “It is hard to believe those fortune cookies. You can never believe them most of the time.”His daughter, Doris Baxter, helped him in playing this game. Finally, she checked his numbers over the phone. Baxter said, “I didn’t know that game. I went, ‘Yeah, looks like you did win.”
